SYSTEMS THINKING & SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES : Poetry - Spring 2006

GROUP 5

Snowflakes are a happy molecules

They look like water when it experiences love

look at all those millions of unique patterns

how intricate each one is,

how separate yet unified as one collective snowstorm

            Amelia George

I bought an organic banana today

They are carried in the dorm’s café

And it had a slightly darker hue

I wondered ‘what had I become accustomed too?

I’m used to the brighter, faker look

Food colored like pictured in a children’s book And while the riches of the earth have such brilliant hues In shopping falsified colors should not be our cues

            Julia Glad

The road less traveled

Dark and difficult to navigate

Great obstacles impede

Great rewards await

Great heroes are born

They call them revolutionaries, visionaries

Why must they be so unique and rare?

Shifting the scale of greatness

Making imagination and progressivism the norm

Creating, nurturing sustainability

            Kevin White

The Circus

The jokers, the players, the misfits, the masters,

are preparing for another show.

As they set up their tents, muddled with color,

I, too, set up mine.

The distinctive pieces are difficult to replace,

gathered after years of isolation and segregation.

Together they form a bond as strong

as the “World’s Largest Rubber Band.”

A stitching intertwined tightly, enough

to prevent any air from their pasts to escape.

Soon the spectators will penetrate the flaps,

each adding to the noise of conversation

billowing up and out the small hole at the top.

The crowd’s roaring laughter will rattle

the walls, testing their strength.

Some parts of the tents are old

and will know how to receive the applause,

the other newly added pieces will stretch

uncomfortably over the crowd’s heads.

Our lights will shine bright on their faces,

not to blind.  They are already blinded,

there only to be amused, not to appreciate.

The people on the outside don’t know,

it ain’t easy.

The tent goes up, but the tent comes down,

all they see is the show.

            Dustin Green

OUR LOVE

If my love for you is your love for me

Then you and I are connected infinitely.

The truth of the wise cannot answer the hows and whys

Of my loves only existence, exists in your eyes

            Brian Bengry

A definition of a dream

is a stray from reality

its when we defer

the way things are

and drift into an unknown world.

            Rebecca Wolfson

Forgive you?

How could I?

When I have given myself to you?

There’s nothing left I have to give.

Not even forgiveness.

            Nicole Hirschfelder

Sweet Secret

Take stolen glances, but please

don't stare

Don't get caught

(Or we could just scream it out)

All bottled up, it emerges in

a constant smile

            Rachel Ogden

Pearly is my friend’s cat

This elderly beauty is 19 years old, an elegantly dignified cat

her paws look eerily like an old woman’s hands

she has arthritis, bony features, and her eyes water

Her hobbies include sleeping, meowing, and jumping onto the counter

I wouldn’t be surprised if she was my grandmother in another life

            Amelia George

I want it all

clean water, vast forests

electricity, plumbing

an ozone layer, a volvo

how selfish

            Laura Muskatevc

Dead to the world until...

The phone rings.

I wake up.

Where are you?

Oh, late for work.

I dress fast

And start my trek.

Another Monday begins.

And so it goes...

            Mary Goddeeris

My sleeves are perfumed

By the faint fragrance of the plant

The coolness of midnight

With the light mist and heavy clouds

I am alone drinking with the moon

            Lok Sze Chan

Ceiling flowing?  No.

Interesting hand inspection?  No.

All I see is you

and I'm tripping out of my mind.

            Rachel Ogden
